  2.            MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES MS EXCEL VERSION 3.0 FOR WINDOWS,
  3.                       OS/2 AND MACINTOSH PLATFORMS

  5.      REDMOND, WA -- January 9, 1991 -- Microsoft Corp. Wednesday announced
  6. Microsoft Excel version 3.0 for the Windows 3.0, Apple Macintosh, and OS/2
  7. Presentation Manager platforms. 
  8.  
  9.      This latest version of the industry's leading graphical spreadsheet
  10. incorporates more than 100 new features, including important innovations in
  11. the user interface that make powerful spreadsheet tasks easier for people
  12. to do.  Microsoft Excel version 3.0 features greatly enhanced analytical
  13. power and output capability.  In addition, the product includes an improved
  14. Help feature for Lotus 1-2-3 users.  Users on each of the three graphical
  15. platforms will see the similar interfaces and can share worksheets and
  16. macros without having to convert file formats.

  18.      "Microsoft Excel 3.0 redefines what it means to be the world's 
  19. greatest spreadsheet," said Bill Gates, chairman and chief executive
  20. officer of Microsoft Corp.  "Our focus with this product has been to add
  21. powerful features that spreadsheet users want and at the same time, make
  22. these features accessible and easy to use."

  25. "POWER MADE EASY" TOOLBAR    
  26. -------------------------
  27.      Much of the Microsoft Excel version 3.0 development effort was 
  28. dedicated to increasing the speed and ease with which users can accomplish
  29. their tasks.  Many of the frequently used operations can now be performed
  30. with just one or two mouse clicks.  The primary feature supporting this is
  31. a new button-oriented Toolbar that speeds the use of frequently used
  32. functions.  For example, users can now click on a button to format cell
  33. contents in bold or italic type.  An exclusive new Autosum button on the
  34. Toolbar allows users to sum a row or column simply by selecting the cell
  35. that will contain the sum and clicking on the Autosum button.  With the
  36. "Best Fit" feature, a  double-click on the right border of a column
  37. automatically adjusts the width to fit the widest cell contents in a
  38. column.

  41. POWERFUL ANALYTICAL TOOLS    
  42. -------------------------
  43.      Microsoft Excel version 3.0 offers the most powerful data analysis
  44. capabilities found in a spreadsheet today.  It is the first spreadsheet to
  45. integrate outlining.  This innovative feature allows large or complex
  46. worksheets to be collapsed or expanded to allow  users to view them at
  47. different levels of detail.  With minimal effort, users can produce reports
  48. -- from highly summarized to fully  detailed -- for various audiences, all
  49. from the same worksheet.   Microsoft Excel can even automatically create an
  50. outline from  examining the contents of a worksheet.

  52.      Users can now easily consolidate data from literally thousands of
  53. different worksheets.  A Consolidate feature allows users to easily 
  54. combine and summarize worksheets in memory or on disk, regardless of their
  55. structure or format.  "Live links" can be established, allowing data
  56. changed within the supporting worksheets to be dynamically updated in the
  57. consolidated report.

  59.      Microsoft Excel Solver, developed by Frontline Systems Inc., is now
  60. available as part of Microsoft Excel version 3.0.  This is a powerful tool
  61. for multi-variable goalseeking linear and non-linear optimization.  While
  62. Microsoft Excel Solver is capable of handling very large optimization
  63. problems, the feature is easy to use and is quite accessible to the average
  64. spreadsheet user.  In addition, Microsoft Excel incorporates a single
  65. variable goalseek feature that can be invoked by dragging a point on a
  66. chart, which changes the underlying data and allows users to view these
  67. changes graphically.

  69.      Also included with Microsoft Excel version 3.0 for Windows is Q+E
  70. version 3.0 from Pioneer Software.  Now included as part of Microsoft
  71. Excel, Q+E integrates Microsoft Excel 3.0 worksheets with major databases
  72. such as Ashton-Tate dBASE and Microsoft SQL Server.  Q+E enables data
  73. within a database to be automatically brought into Microsoft Excel for
  74. quick manipulation and analysis.

  76.      Users can browse through databases or select, sort and join database
  77. files simply by using the mouse to select fields and tables.  Q+E version 
  78. 3.0 adds additional support for .XLS files so that users can work with
  79. Microsoft Excel databases directly.

  81.      "Some of Microsoft Excel's most powerful features, such as 
  82. consolidation outlining and linking are also among its easiest to use,"
  83. said Robert Doherty, programmer/analyst at Paine Webber Inc.  "Complex
  84. tasks often intimidate users.  That is not the case with Microsoft Excel."

  87. IMPROVED CHARTING AND OUTPUT TOOLS    
  88. ----------------------------------
  89.      Microsoft Excel offers the most extensive range of output tools found
  90. in any spreadsheet.  Support for color now includes a choice of 16
  91. customizable colors and 18 patterns, and font support has been increased to
  92. 256 unique fonts per worksheet.  In addition, a styles feature, similar to
  93. that in Microsoft Word for Windows, allows users to specify a group of
  94. formatting characteristics and reference it by name.

  96.      Microsoft Excel version 3.0 allows users to mix text and graphics to
  97. create visually attractive output.  Users can take any Microsoft Excel
  98. chart and place it on a worksheet.  Microsoft Excel version 3.0 also
  99. supports text boxes that can be placed anywhere on the worksheet.

  101.      The charting capability in Microsoft Excel version 3.0 is greatly
  102. enhanced.  Users can now select from 68 chart types, including 24 
  103. three-dimensional charts that may be rotated and viewed from different
  104. perspectives.  In addition, users can paste graphics from the clipboard
  105. directly into a chart to create picture charts.

  107.      Further, Microsoft Excel 3.0 offers drawing tools.  By clicking
  108. buttons on the Toolbar, users can draw basic graphics such as rectangles,
  109. lines, circles, arcs, arrows and text boxes directly onto the worksheet.

  112. HELP FOR LOTUS 1-2-3 USERS    
  113. --------------------------
  114.      A vastly improved Help feature paves the way for Lotus 1-2-3 users to
  115. learn Microsoft Excel for Windows version 3.0 with minimal effort.  Typing
  116. in Lotus 1-2-3 commands from the Microsoft Excel 3.0 Help window provides
  117. step-by-step instructions on how to execute the equivalent Microsoft Excel
  118. commands.  If desired, a demonstration of the actual Microsoft Excel
  119. command sequence can be performed on the screen.

  122. FIRST APPLICATION TO INCLUDE OBJECT LINKING AND EMBEDDING (OLE)
  123. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  124.      Microsoft Excel version 3.0 for Windows is the first shipping 
  125. application to fully implement object linking.  Linking and embedding
  126. technology allows users to embed objects such as Microsoft Excel charts or
  127. worksheets into other application documents and lets Microsoft Excel place
  128. objects from other applications into its worksheets.  For example, users
  129. can place a Microsoft Excel for Windows worksheet into a Microsoft
  130. PowerPoint for Windows presentation graphics program slide.  The worksheet
  131. "object" is stored inside the PowerPoint program and can be edited
  132. from within PowerPoint with a double-click.  This double-click
  133. automatically starts Microsoft Excel with the worksheet or chart ready to
  134. be  edited.  After editing, the user exits from Microsoft Excel and 
  135. changes to the worksheet or chart are incorporated into the PowerPoint
  136. slide.

  138.      Linking and embedding technology was initiated by the Microsoft 
  139. applications group and incorporated into the object linking and embedding
  140. (OLE) specification.  Applications that adhere to the OLE specification
  141. will be able to both link and embed objects back and  forth with Microsoft
  142. Excel 3.0.

  144.      Under System 7.0, Microsoft Excel 3.0 for the Macintosh will support
  145. OLE and be the first application available for the Macintosh to follow the
  146. Microsoft OLE specification.

  149. SUPPORT FOR HEWLETT-PACKARD NEW WAVE    
  150. ------------------------------------
  151.      Microsoft Excel version 3.0 provides Level 3+ support for Hewlett-
  152. Packard New Wave version 3.0.  Users who want to run Microsoft Excel under
  153. New Wave should contact Hewlett-Packard at 800/848-9283 for the New Wave
  154. Excel Bridge.

  157. PRICING, AVAILABILITY AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS    
  158. ---------------------------------------------
  159.      Microsoft Excel version 3.0 is available now for the Windows graphical
  160. environment version 3.0.  Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 3.0
  161. and Microsoft Excel for OS/2, version 3.0 will ship in the first half of
  162. 1991.  Suggested retail pricing for each version is $495.  Users of
  163. previous versions of Microsoft Excel can update to version 3.0 for $129.
  164. People who acquire Microsoft Excel for Windows version 2.1 from Dec. 7,
  165. 1990, to April 16, 1991, are eligible for a free update to version 3.0
  166. (shipping and handling extra).  People who acquire previous versions of
  167. Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh from Dec. 7, 1990, until the product
  168. ships are  eligible to update to version 3.0 for $50 (shipping and handling 
  169. extra).

  171.      System requirements for the Windows version: Windows graphical 
  172. environment version 3.0, an Intel 80286 (or higher) microprocessor, 1 MB of
  173. RAM is required (2 MB recommended), a hard disk with at least 3 MB of free
  174. space, a 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch high density disk drive, an EGA VGA, 8514/A
  175. or Hercules graphics board and monitor.

  177.      System requirements for the Macintosh version: a Macintosh system with
  178. at least 1 MB of RAM (2 MB for MultiFinder or System 7.0), System 6.03 or
  179. higher (or Finder 6.1 or higher) and one 800K disk drive and a hard drive
  180. with at least 3 MB of free disk space.  Some features of Microsoft Excel
  181. 3.0 will require System 7.0.

  183.      System requirements for the OS/2 version: OS/2 operating system 
  184. version 1.2 or higher, an Intel 80286 (or higher) microprocessor, 2.5 MB of
  185. RAM, a hard disk with at least 3 MB of free space, and a high  density
  186. 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch disk drive.

  188.      For all versions a mouse is recommended.  Some features require a
  189. mouse.

  192. NOTE TO INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS:

  194.      Microsoft Excel version 3.0 has been customized to meet the language-
  195. specific needs of international markets and provide for the easy
  196. exchange of data and files between users in different countries.  Microsoft
  197. Excel 3.0 makes full use of the international features offered by the
  198. Windows graphical environment version 3.0, Macintosh and OS/2 control
  199. panels.  And a new feature, International Macro Sheets, enables users to
  200. write macros which will work virtually  unchanged with different language
  201. versions of Microsoft Excel version 3.0.

  203.      The English version of Microsoft Excel version 3.0 will be announced
  204. and available this month in Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway,
  205. Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong,
  206. Argentina, Chile, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and
  207. Taiwan.

  209.      French, German, Swedish, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Norwegian 
  210. versions of Microsoft Excel version 3.0 are scheduled to ship later  this
  211. year.  Other language versions to follow.
